József Szejtli[szerkesztés]

The world-wide recognized pioneer of cyclodextrin technology.

Born in 1933, he graduated as a chemical engineer in the Budapest University of Technology in 1957. He made his PhD at the Agricultural Department of the same university, where he became assistant professor. In 1963-64 he worked for the Norwegian University of Science and Technology Trondheim (Department of Marine Technology) as a fellow of the Norwegian Royal Scientific Committee. Then in 1965-66 he continued his research on polysaccharides in German Institute of Human Nutrition, Potsdam Rehbrücke, Germany. In 1967-1970 he was professor at the University of Havana. After these experiences in abroad he returned to Hungary and worked for Chinoin Pharmaceutical and Chemical Works, one of the biggest pharmaceutical companies of Hungary. He was the head of the Biochemical Research Unit, later the director of a subsidiary till 1991, when he founded CycloLab Cyclodextrin Research Laboratory Ltd. CycloLab is an all-around cyclodextrin laboratory engaged with research on application of this special molecule in pharmaceutical, food, cosmetic industries, agriculture, biotechnology and environmental protection. New technologies have been worked out and novel derivatives synthesized under his direction.

József Szejtli was editor of CYCLODEXTRIN NEWS, the monthly periodical on cyclodextrins from 1989 till his death in 2004. He was member of the editorial board of Journal of Inclusion Phenomena and of the organizing committee of the International Cyclodextrin Symposia. The first symposium was organized by him and his team in 1981. In 1984 a special issue of Journal of Inclusion Phenomena (18/3) was dedicated to his 60th birthday. He is author of approx. 400 scientific publications, 7 books and inventor of approx. 80 patents. He was awarded by several prizes including the prize of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (1986), Incheba Golden Prize (1988), Moët-Hennessy prize (1991) and the highest scientific award in Hungary, the Széchenyi prize (2003). The research laboratory of CycloLab has been named József Szejtli Cyclodextrin Research Laboratory. The management of CycloLab established the Szejtli Prize in 2013 to be presented bi-annually to a young cyclodextrin chemist for outstanding results in cyclodextrin research.
