George Stubbs (Liverpool, Egyesült Királyság, 1724. augusztus 25. - Marylebone, London, Egyesült Királyság, 1806. július 10.) angol festő. Leginkább állatokat, főként lovakat ábrázoló festményeiről ismert. Az autodidakta Stubbs a 18. század egyéb nagy művészeitől, például William Hogarthtól,Reynoldstól vagy Thomas Gainsborough-tól függetlenül sajátította el készségeit.

Élete

Lovas képein zsoképortrék, vadászjelenetek, versenyfutamok és a felső osztály lovas sportrendezvényei láthatók. A brit kormány 2012. januárjában ideiglenes kiviteli tilalmat rendelt el George Stubbs két képére, azután, hogy azokat eladták egy Nagy-Britannián kívüli vevőnek. A kulturális minisztérium első lépésként 2012. augusztus 5-ig tiltotta meg a kengurut és vadkutyát ábrázoló, 1772-ben készült festmények eladását külföldi vevőknek, majd a tilalmat november 5-ig meghosszabbították. (Stubbs egyébként sohasem látott sem élő kengurut, sem dingót; a festményeket Cook kapitány első felfedező útjának egyik résztvevője rendelte meg a festőtől.)
