| Leírás | DRG CLass "01.10" as rebuilt by DB to Class "012" oile-burning 4-6-2 No.012 066 (ex- 01 1066) at Schweinfurt on a steam special to Goppingen, 09/12. The "01.10's" were a 3-cylinder, streamlined development of the Class "01" Pacifics for the elite express services. The DRG identified a requirement for 400 and placed an initial order for 204 but only 55 were built 1939-40 before the war stopped all further production. The "01.10's" were fitted with boilers using a new, advanced high tensile steel designed for high boiler pressures - "St47K-Mo". However, in the event the steel proved highly susceptable to premature fatigue and by the end of the war the "01.10's" were in a sorry state, with bits of their streamilned casing having fallen off or been removed, and their boilers in a dangerous condition. They were immediately withdrawn. All 55 were in West Germany and passed to the DB which could not afford to leave such valuable assets idle. 1 was scrapped in 1949 because it was in such bad condition and the remainder in 1949-50 had their streamlining removed (no front fall plate was fitted) and were given extensive repairs (including welding the cracked boilers) but this did not solve the problem of prematurely aging St47K boilers. Finally, the DB decided to completely rebuild the engines in 1953-56 with new all-welded, high- performance boilers of conventional steel, combustion chambers, wide chimney and Witte smoke deflectors. As coal burners, the DB later reclassified them "011". In 1956-58, 34 were converted to oil burners (later reclassified "012"). The rebuilt locos were amongst the finest Pacifics in Europe, being fast and powerful with a high availability. The last (012's) were withdrawn at Rheine in 1975. | |||||||||||||
