Mitchell, lunar module pilot, descended in the Lunar Module (LM) to explore the moon, astronaut Stuart A. Roosa, command module pilot, remained with the Command and Service Modules (CSM) in lunar orbit.

The Active Seismic Experiment (ASE) will generate seismic waves with controlled explosions and monitor the response to provide data about the layering of the materials below the lunar surface. Images were taken by Astronauts Shepard and Mitchell during EVA 1 of the Apollo 14 mission.
